![]() I use RunABC to produce MIDI files from the ABC.TablEdit is a program for creating, editing, printing and listening to tablature and sheet music (standard notation)įor guitar and other fretted, stringed instruments, including mandolin, ukulele, bass and banjo (even taking into consideration the special aspect of the fifth string).Īdditionally, TablEdit, while designed for guitarists, by guitarists, is not limited to fretted instruments like other tablature programs. I edit the ABC files using the gVim graphical editor, and have automated the conversion to PDF by means of Vim scripting (all I have to do is type a certain key sequence in gVim to convert the ABC file I'm editing to a PDF of standard notation). I don't use it for my transcriptions because I find ANY graphical interface to be too slow and clunky given my high volume of transcriptions.Īll of my transcriptions are done in an extended form of ABC notation, which I convert to a PDF of standard notation using a customized version of abc2ps. It can't do tablature worth beans, though. If you just want a fairly simple graphical interface for producing standard notation, I have found MuseScore to work fairly well for that. (I've done that for mandolin, despite my reservations on using tab for that instrument.) It will even produce music with alternating lines of notation and tab, which I take it you're wanting to do. You might find TablEdit a little simpler to deal with. I've always found I could do pretty much anything with it, but hardly anything is intuitive with that software. ![]() With my fiddle and mandolin students, I emphasize ear training and standard notation.Īs for software, I would be surprised if Sibelius couldn't do it. ![]() There are centuries-old traditions of writing and reading standard notation for violin and mandolin, and I don't think we should chuck it. ![]() Tablature works great for fretted instruments, but personally I don't even like it for mandolin. I have transcribed over 800 tunes, all to standard notation. I would also suggest not fooling with tablature whatsoever. ![]()
